Depending on what the problem is, a 1998 machine might not be economical to repair. If it’s the motherboard or the processor, I can assure you that buying a brand new Mac and paying someone to transfer the data for you and even set your new machine up will cost less than the repair, and it’s difficult to even find someone who will work on it.

Can someone who was an apple person ten years ago say whether target disk mode would work to retrieve the data from the old machine? It would save this user quite a bit of time and money if it’s possible.

I’ve only worked with Macs since OS 9, and those will all allow you to link hard drives with a firewire cable and use “target disk mode” to yank all the data and all or many of the settings from the old HD to the new with fantastically little effort.

Whatever you choose, have the technicians crack the case open in front of you and give you an estimate. If they charge you a fee to even look, go elsewhere. Both geek squad and apple will tell you if your money is better spent on a new machine than on a repair, and both should be able to retrieve any retrievable data from your old machine.

Sounds like they’re doing it for a fair price whilst Apple are preying on their users’ paranoia thinking that the only people who can look after their Apple computer is Apple.

It’s no different from big corporates such as HP or IBM charging five or ten times as more than Crucial or Kingston for their RAM when it’s all come out of the same factory.
