All the best kids apps use games and other fun activities children enjoy as tools to impart some learning. The thing that makes it so ideal is that children love playing around with these gadgets and know more about the functions than even the parents. Unfortunately, a lot of parents still won’t or can’t give their child a personal smart phone or tablet with its own applications. They will never know how much it helps with a child’s education and development.

That’s OK if the parents can spend time with their children and they download the kind of applications that are made for children. Note that these are very much different from the normal functional ones that adults use. What children need are cartoons or animals.

All the best kids apps are filled with funny animals or cartoons, or even cartoons featuring animals. In the education section of the Apple iTunes store, one of the top featured applications is titled ‘How Rocket Learned to Read.’ The main character is a dog named Rocket, and it’s a very skillful way of teaching little children how to read while they’re having fun watching the cartoon dog.

Another favorite that all kids enjoy are games which can be played on the iPhone and/or iPad. An example would be the Math Bingo application featured in the educational math section of the iTunes store. This game motivates children to learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by offering five bingo bugs in a row if the user correctly solves math problems.

Monkey Math School Sunshine is a math application that allows children to spend the day on the beach (virtually) with a cartoon monkey and a cute sea turtle. Users just need to slide the right numbers into place, and follow along with the monkey and turtle. The duo is shown frolicking on the beach with a bucket and pail.

The monkey and turtle have a bucket and pail for digging holes in the sand. Children can join in by sliding in the correct numbers to addition and subtraction problems. There are tons of applications like the ones mentioned above, targeting different kinds of learning and developmental aspects from handwriting and spelling to books, colors and crafts.

Some are even meant to enhance social skills. There is one application called ‘Tacky Goes to Camp, ‘ which is widely known to be one of the best kids apps. It follows a group of penguins who set out on a camping trip. Preschoolers have fun watching the cartoons, while learning what’s in the back-packs and what people do at camp, including campfire activities like making s’mores and singing.
