Verizon Communications reported strong third quarter earnings on Friday morning. Earnings and margin improvements were up compared to the second quarter 2010, reports Yahoo Finance. The wireless provider also claimed continuous strong cash flow.
“Verizon built on a strong second quarter with a stronger third quarter, resulting in improved earnings performance and substantial cash flow,” said Chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg. “We are building momentum and are on track to achieve our goal of growing earnings in the second half of the year. we are excited by the opportunities we see to expand wireline margins and the growth we see related to the upcoming launch of next-generation wireless services.”
Some of that momentum may come from a deal the provider is reaching with Apple. Earlier this month, Apple, which has limited the iPhone to AT&T, announced it would make the flagship phone available on Verizon Wireless, a source close to the company said.
The iPhone has been losing market share to smart phones using Google’s Android system, which is compatible with Verizon, the largest wireless carrier in the United States.
Apple and Verizon will begin selling the phone early next year, a source with ties to the company told The New York Times, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Apple and Verizon Wireless declined to comment.
The long-awaited arrival of the iPhone on Verizon could reset the smartphone market in the United States. The iPhone remains the best-selling smartphone, but around the world, many carriers competing with AT&T have been promoting models running on Android.
This week, Nielsen reported that Android accounted for 32 percent of the new smartphones sold in the United States in last six months. The iPhone accounted for only 25 percent.
No product brings Apple as much revenue as the iPhone, and observers say seeing that market threatened may have finally pushed Apple to end its exclusive deal with AT&T.
In August, Verizon came under fire from the group Reporters Without Borders for reportedly nearing an agreement with Google that would allow them to “relay online content to Internet users more quickly if the content’s creators are willing to pay for the privilege. such an agreement would be a threat to net neutrality and the (Federal Communications Commission) has a responsibility to ensure commercial decisions do not infringe upon the free flow of information,” the group said.
